Just catching up on some other homeschooling activities (other than the field trips).
I can't believe I forgot to add a really fun field trip that we had on November 22nd! We went to Independence, MO to "The Puppetry Art Institute"so we could learn about puppetry. Our theme this year, since it has been the year for the Winter Olympics, was "cultural activities and sports from around the world"; puppetry has been found just about everywhere.
The kids all got to use some type of plastic-y cast face that was a remnant of puppet faces used at the Hazelle Rollins Puppet Factory in Kansas City, MO. from 1932-1980. There are a great deal of them left but the unfortunate thing is that once those puppet heads are gone, they can no longer have the service of letting children make their own puppets (of that kind anyway). The process of making those type of cast puppet heads is now "unsafe" to make in the U.S. and too expensive to ship from other countries. I know, right? Not unsafe to make in other countries?! - moving on...
Each child was able to choose the type of face they wanted and to paint it using the type of paints that have been used on them since 1932.
Then, with their made puppet, every child participated in a puppet show with a professional puppeteer.
Sometimes I feel that marionettes and puppets are a little creepy, but overall this was a pretty fun and a very unique field trip!
